What is a Paraphrase?

Paraphrasing is the suggested form of indirect quotation used in academic writing. It's fundamental to paraphrase since it demonstrates that you comprehend the source material well enough to express it in your own words.

How to Paraphrase?

Use this three steps to paraphrase, which is: Read, Close, and Write (see example)

  1. Read the part of the paragraph to be quoted that falls into the following categories:
    • Definition;
    • Problem;
    • Solution;
    • Numerical data supporting your paragraph (Percentages, numbers, years, comparisons, etc.);
    • Statement;
    • Cases; and/or
    • Anything else that supports your argument
  2. Close and jot down important things without looking at the reading.
  3. Write your own sentences using your notes.

You can also use Paraphrasing Tools available on the Internet such as Quillbot (for English) and Spinner.ID (for Indonesian). Use only according to your needs, and make sure you know and can explain the source of the paraphrase properly.
